“Reiki is love, Love is wholeness,
Wholeness is balance,
Balance is well-being,
Well-being is freedom from disease.”
~ Dr. Mikao Usui
Reiki Healing
Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing. The lead form of Reiki practiced today, also known as Usui Reiki, was created by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. It’s a complementary or alternative health approach. The word ‘Reiki’ is made of two Japanese words – ‘Rei’ which means “Higher Power” and ‘ki’ which is “life force energy”. Reiki, then, means “spiritually-guided life force energy”. It is sometimes simply referred to as Universal Life Force. This energy assists with energetic imbalances in the body, in recharging energetically depleted areas and dealing with the stresses of daily life. Reiki does not directly cure diseases or illnesses; instead, it’s used as a way to manage symptoms and improve general well-being. Reiki healing may be carried out in person or remotely through distance healing.

During a session
A typical Reiki session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. At your first appointment, you’ll meet with your Reiki practitioner. You’ll have a short chat about the process and your expectations or intentions. Let your practitioner know about any symptoms you want addressed or if there are places in the body on which you’d like them to focus. Also, let the practitioner know if you have any injuries or places that are sensitive to touch.
You simply lie down fully clothed on the treatment table. You will be covered with a blanket, pillow beneath your head and knees. Usually soft, relaxing music will be playing in the background. For the most part there won’t be any talking during the session, but you can feel free to let your practitioner know if there’s something you need to feel more comfortable or to share what you’re experiencing.
The practitioner will move their hands around your body. They may touch you lightly or have their hands just above your body.
Reiki has a denser vibrational frequency often referred to as ‘earthy’. You may experience sensations in the body such as temperature changes, tingling or twitching. Some people report seeing visualisations such as colours or pictures, or having memories appear, emotional release, or you may just fall asleep. Try to allow whatever arises to pass without attaching too much meaning to it. Your experiences may become deeper the more you continue with reiki.
